Find any country code in the list below, with the digits to dial from Australia. A country code is the 1 to 3 digit number you dial after the international prefix 0011 to call another country. Australia’s own country code is +61.
To call another country from Australia, dial 0011, the country code, then the number without its first 0. For example, the UK is 0011 44, the USA and Canada are 0011 1, and New Zealand is 0011 64. On a mobile, type + in place of 0011.

What Is a Country Code?
A country code is the 1 to 3 digit number that identifies a country in an international phone number. The ITU, the United Nations agency for telecommunications, gives out country codes under its standard E.164. For example, the UK is +44, India is +91 and New Zealand is +64.
The + in front of a code stands for the international prefix, which is 0011 in Australia. The prefix tells your phone network that an international call follows. The country code tells it which country to call.
How to Use Country Codes to Call From Australia
Use country codes in this order: international prefix, country code, then the local number.
- Dial 0011, the international prefix for calls out of Australia. On a mobile you can type + instead.
- Dial the country code from the list above.
- Dial the number without its first 0, if it has one. The area code stays, without its 0.
For example, the London number 020 7946 0000 becomes 0011 44 20 7946 0000. Our guide on how to call overseas from Australia covers each step, and our phone number format guide shows how to write a number with its code.
Australia’s Country Code: +61
The country code for Australia is +61. To give your number to someone overseas, write +61 and drop the first 0. A mobile 0412 345 678 becomes +61 412 345 678, and a Sydney landline 02 9283 9292 becomes +61 2 9283 9292. Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands also use +61. Norfolk Island uses +672.
Country Codes Shared by More Than One Country
Some phone codes cover more than one country. The digits after the code then identify the country.
- +1 covers the USA, Canada and 22 other places in the Caribbean and the Pacific. Each has its own 3 digit area code after the 1, for example American Samoa (684), Anguilla (264), Antigua and Barbuda (268), Bahamas (242), Barbados (246), Bermuda (441), British Virgin Islands (284), Cayman Islands (345).
- +7 covers Russia and Kazakhstan. Kazakh numbers start +7 6 or +7 7.
- +44 covers the UK, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man.
- +39 covers Italy and Vatican City.
- +262 covers Reunion and Mayotte.
Country Codes That Look Alike
- +420 and +421: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. They shared +42 until 1997.
- +86, +852 and +886: mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
- +212: Morocco. A number that starts +1 212 is in New York.
- +353 and +44: Ireland, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK.
ISO Country Codes Are Not Phone Codes
The 2 letter ISO codes in the list, such as AU, GB and DE, come from the ISO 3166 standard. They appear in web addresses such as .au and .de, and in forms that ask for a country. You never dial them. The phone code for GB is +44.
Identify the Country From a Phone Number
Look at the digits after the + or after the prefix 00 or 0011. Type the first 1, 2 or 3 of them into the search box above. No country code is the start of another one, so once the digits match a code, they match only that code. For +1, +7 and other shared codes, check the next digits too.
Choose your country and see every card that calls it, with its rate and talk time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country does +44 mean?
+44 is the United Kingdom. Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man also use +44. From Australia dial 0011 44, then the number without its first 0.
What is the country code for Australia in a phone number?
Australia is +61. Write +61, then the number without its first 0: 0412 345 678 becomes +61 412 345 678.
Which country has country code 1?
Country code 1 covers the USA, Canada and 22 places in the Caribbean and the Pacific. The 3 digit area code after the 1 shows where the number is.
What is the ISO standard for country codes?
ISO 3166 sets the letter codes for countries, such as AU for Australia. Phone country codes come from a different standard, ITU-T E.164.
Is a country code the same as an area code?
No. The country code picks the country, and the area code picks a region inside it. You dial the country code first, then the area code without its first 0.
What does 00 mean in front of a country code?
00 is the international prefix in most countries. From Australia the prefix is 0011, so replace 00 with 0011, or type + on a mobile.
