Every number in the USA has 10 digits: a 3 digit area code and a 7 digit local number, written like (212) 555-0123. Mobiles use the same area codes as landlines, so you cannot tell a mobile from a landline by the number.
The USA, Canada and several Caribbean countries all share the +1 code. The area code tells you where a +1 number is, and calls to Caribbean +1 numbers cost more than calls to the USA or Canada.

Most big US cities have extra area codes for the same area, such as 646 and 332 alongside 212 in Manhattan, so an unfamiliar code can still be a real city number.

Why Your Call to the USA Is Not Connecting
- Adding a second 1. The long-distance 1 used inside the USA is the same digit as the country code, so dial 0011 1 212 555 0123, not 0011 1 1 212 555 0123.
- Dialling 011 from Australia. 011 is the code people in the USA use to call overseas; from Australia it is 0011.
- Leaving out the area code. A number given as 7 digits needs its 3 digit area code from Australia.
- Calling a 1-800, 888 or 877 toll-free number. These normally do not connect from outside North America, so ask for the normal 10 digit number.
- Your mobile plan may block international calls, or need extra credit for them. A phone card avoids this, because you dial an Australian access number first.
- On a phone card, the overseas number goes in after the access number and PIN, and ends with #.
