How to Call Israel from Australia: 3 Ways
Most people make calls to Israel in one of 3 ways.
- Calling card. You dial a local access number in Australia, so the card works from any landline or mobile phone. It needs no internet connection and no new SIM card. International rates to Israel start at 2.3c a minute.
- Your calling plan. Many calling plans charge a rate per minute for international dialling, and some block it. Check the rate to Israel before you call.
- Internet calling apps (VoIP). Calls are free when both people have the same app and a data plan or Wi-Fi. Call quality depends on the internet connection at both ends.
A calling card suits calls to landlines and to people with a weak internet connection.
Why a Call to Israel Does Not Work
- Keeping the 0 after 972, e.g. 0011 972 050 234 5678 instead of 0011 972 50 234 5678.
- Dialling 00 from an Israeli line that is not registered with an international provider. Casual callers need a 01X carrier code such as 014 in front of the number.
- Treating an 07X number as a mobile. 07X is a nationwide fixed-line range; mobiles start with 05.
- Assuming a 1-800 number will work from Australia. It usually will not; ask for a normal landline or mobile number.
- Getting the clock change wrong. Israel moves its clocks on a Friday in late March, two days before Europe, and back on the last Sunday of October.
- Your mobile plan may block international calls, or need extra credit for them. A phone card avoids this, because you dial an Australian access number first.
- On a phone card, the overseas number goes in after the access number and PIN, and ends with #.
Calling Australia from Israel
People in Israel call Australia with 00 or a carrier code such as 012, 013 or 014, then 61 and the Australian number without its first 0. An Australian mobile 0412 345 678 becomes 00 61 412 345 678, or 014 61 412 345 678 with a carrier code. Plain 00 works only on a line registered with an international provider.
